Sustainability Is Key

Play Workshop is committed to reducing our environmental impact where possible. In implementing sustainability across our business, Play Workshop will:

STEP 01

Maintain an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of sustainability principles and practices relevant to the business and its operations.

STEP 02

Think holistically, and innovatively, and account for externalities and whole of life impacts, such that there is a net sustainability benefit.

STEP 03

Be proactive in addressing risks to the environment, society and the economy.

  • The use of resources should not exceed the limits of regeneration.
  • The use of non-renewable resources should create enduring asset value (everlasting and/or fully recyclable) and be limited to applications where substitution with renewable resources is not practical.

STEP 04

Product design should be a whole system, based on consideration of all impacts
from product inception to reuse/repurposing.

STEP 05

Product and project design should consider longevity, component re-use, repair and recyclability.

STEP 06

Eliminating waste should be a primary design consideration. Unavoidable waste from any one process should be examined for recycling potential as input to another productive process.

Play Workshop measures the performance of the supply chain by regular communication with manufacturers, looking toward product development and material choices, keeping account of and promoting sustainable alternatives over lesser ones, and marketing heavily towards nature-play products and sustainable design. Play Workshop also monitors sub-contractors regularly to ensure sound environmental principles are applied to each project and that waste is minimised and recycling undertaken wherever possible.

In our designs and specifications, Play Workshop prioritises natural materials where possible. We work with our network of local suppliers to integrate natural materials and finishes. With the capacity and capability of making custom timber and sandstone play
pieces in-house, we are also able to control the supply chain and ensure that all materials conform to our policies (please see Item 14 in our WHS Plan for further information on our non-conformance policy).
One of our reputable timber suppliers, Ironwood Australia, provides sustainably sourced local hardwood. For every tree harvested by Ironwood, they plant a tree as a part of their Future Forests Sustainable Replanting Scheme. Our ironbark posts, logs and steppers are durability class 1, and perfectly suited to Australian conditions.
We endeavour to use recycled or re-manufactured materials when possible. This is determined on a project by project basis. In most cases, we try to refurbish elements of projects when appropriate rather than replacing with new. Existing play equipment can be disassembled and reassembled for reuse. We also encourage the use of services such as the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds to recycle redundant play equipment. Natural materials can be recycled or reused.
Pallets, plastic, and cardboard can be returned to Play Workshop for reuse, recycling, to be recovered internally or through an approved recycling centre.
